The Scrinium of the Roman Church existed from the 4th century, functioning as both library and archives. In the 6th century it was under the Primicerius Notariorum (see ID VATV032-A). By the end of the 8th century it was headed by the Bibliothecarius, who also served as the chancellor. This library was lost in the 13th century. Gualterus Burlaeus, also known as Walter of Burley (or Burleigh) was an English scholar and philosopher. He studied at Oxford under Duns Scotus, taught at Paris, and was envoy to the Vatican. He wrote on the lives of the early philosophers, including Aristotle, with whom he occasionally disagreed. At least fifty works are attributed to him.
